Description

Archaeological site of Monte Castello / Castel Vecchio / Gogala

Mount Castello, currently planted with pines, is made up of two rocky and impervious peaks, the lowest is about half the height of the first, and is connected to these by a plateau called the "luggetta". Here are the most conspicuous remains of the ancient fortified fortress. Currently the entrance is
from via Matrice and starts at an altitude of 843 m to climb along a path that exceeds 120 meters in height, to reach the top. The so-called “Finistrune or Balcony” is the most important of the small rocky points that rise from the northern edge of the plateau and act as a link between Castel Vecchio and Monte Castello. It is affected by the remains of stairways and by rooms deeply carved into the rock. Proceeding eastwards, Monte Castel Vecchio is affected by the ruins of a Norman fortress built after the expulsion of the Arabs by Ruggero. The narrow and winding climb that leads to the top is very steep and flanked by walls
