Archaeological site of Monte Bonifato
Description

Archaeological site of Monte Bonifato

Ancient Arab cistern. The building was the source of water supply for the inhabitants who resided in the medieval district of Calatubo.

In ancient times a fortified city stood on Monte Bonifato, as evidence of which several artifacts have been found.

This city over the centuries has gone through various phases of population and depopulation and for a long time it was inhabited at the same time as Alcamo (which is located on the slopes of the mountain), before disappearing. In particular, it was inhabited starting from the late Bronze Age and the Elymians, Romans and Byzantines settled there.

From the citations of Licofrone, it is known that this inhabited center was called in ancient times Long-lasting. The name "Longuro" also indicated the mountain, which according to other hypotheses was also called "Aereo" and "Longarico" (which would correspond to the Latin name of Longuro).

The ancient inhabited center was defended by a wall on three sides and was made up of unicellular houses (ie with a single room). (Source Wikipedia)
