Archaeological Site of Colle di Girgenti-S. Mary of the Greeks
The site affects the top of the Girgenti Hill and part of its slopes, currently urbanized. On the hill it has been ascertained the presence of a prehistoric settlement, to which the cave tombs located on the northern side, just below the Cathedral, belong. Excavation tests carried out by the Superintendency BB.CC.AA. of Agrigento
inside the Cathedral itself they have brought to light wall structures of the Greek age. The archaeological excavations inside the Church of Santa Maria dei Greci and some buildings adjacent to it, have returned not only part of the structures of the Greek temple on which the church was built but also prehistoric ceramics relevant to the frequentation of the site before the foundation. by Akargas. Finally, it should be noted the presence of numerous underground cavities and cisterns ascribable to the Greek era and reused over the centuries.
