Archeological site of Cattolica Eraclea
The site encompasses the entire area of the Greek city of Heraclea Minoa and extends over a large plateau to the left of the Platani River (ancient Halykos). The city was built around the sixth century. BC but the remains visible today are those relating to the Hellenistic era. In addition to the remains of the imposing wall
most of the built-up area, the theater and the sacred area on the plateau above are visible. In the flat area north of the city there is an archaic necropolis and a settlement from the late antiquity to which an early Christian basilica belongs. Furthermore, on the north-eastern side there is an area of necropolis coeval with this last phase of attendance: there is a hypogeum dug into the rock with three arcosolium tombs inside while on the north-western side there are other arcosolium tombs.
