Description

Archaeological site of C.da Castellaccio

The apical part of the hill, c.da Castellaccio, occupies the southern end and reaches an altitude of about 610 m above sea level, here remains of masonry structures and stones have been found together with very few ceramic fragments. The site covers an area of approximately 14000 m2, the few
The ceramic finds found consisted substantially of pithos fragments, coarse-textured ceramic fragments with a reddish brown surface, and finally fragments of achromatic ceramic walls, probably pots or in any case objects with a considerable diameter. The almost all small-cut stones are concentrated on the highest part of the hill and it seems almost to be able to recognize the base of a circular structure that rests directly on the stone, the quantity of material found and the area of diffusion of the fragments have allowed the definition of a rather large area. On the southern side of the site, the most accessible one, the remains of a wall structure were found, probably a fortification, which develops in an East-West direction.
