Sanctuary of S. Antonio da Padova and S. Heart of Jesus
LOCATION: Via S. Cecilia 121 DATE: 1921-1926 DESCRIPTION: The construction of the current Basilica-Sanctuary, begun on April 3, 1921, was completed in 1926 with the title "Temple of the Evangelical Rogation of the Heart of Jesus" and "Sanctuary of Sant 'Antonio ”. The Sanctuary was the first masonry church built in the heart of Messina, after the earthquake of 28 December 1908. While the building reconstruction of the city will be fundamentally influenced by the liberty style of Ernesto Basile, the new churches will refer to ancient architecture. The Church occupies an area of about 500 square meters and has a height of 15 meters up to the eaves of the central nave. The bell tower is directly connected to the volume of the church, the height of which, for anti-seismic safety reasons, was limited to 16 meters.
