Description

Sanctuary of Gulfi (Santa Maria la Vetere)

Built on an early Christian temple in the sixteenth century. Renovated in the eighteenth century. The church is located at the ancient site of the town, then called Gulfi. The church in its present form has an eighteenth-century bell tower and facade, the work of Benedetto Cultraro. The interior, with five altars, was decorated in stucco in the XNUMXth century. In the sanctuary the marble statue of a Madonna with Child is venerated, known as the Virgin of Gulfi which according to tradition, put into the sea in a box together with the statue of the Holy Savior to escape iconoclasm, was found on the beach by the inhabitants of Gela and would then have been brought to Gulfi by a cart pulled by oxen left free.
