Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Udienza and the miracle of the oxen
Description

Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Udienza and the miracle of the oxen

The construction of this sanctuary is linked to a legend, according to which, “one day a man sick with leprosy arrived in Mezzojuso. When the inhabitants noticed it, fearing the contagion, they threw it out. He then took refuge in a grove and fell asleep there; while he slept he saw, at the bottom of a bush, the image of the Madonna with Child in her arms painted on a large sandstone boulder. The man approached and heard the voice of the Madonna who urged him to go to the village and tell the inhabitants that he wanted a chapel to be built right on that point, as evidence of this the Madonna cured him of his illness she had him washed with the water that rose in that place. Then the man went to the village, gave the news to the inhabitants, who in a short time built, in that place, a small chapel to venerate the Blessed Virgin, which they called "Madonna dei Miracoli". The church was built when the inhabitants of that neighborhood took a cart with oxen and put the stone on the cart to transport it to the town. It is said that at a certain point the oxen stopped and there was no way to make them continue, so people interpreted what happened in the sense that the Madonna had chosen that place as a point to erect the Sanctuary, therefore the current Sanctuary was built right in that place "
