Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli

Built in 1547 following the discovery of an icon of the Madonna dei Miracoli in an abandoned chapel. Renovated in the XNUMXth century. 

The sanctuary, in Baroque-Renaissance style, has two facades, each with a portal. In the main facade (which faces the path) there is a gallery window surrounded by two smaller windows.

The interior of the sanctuary, rectangular in shape, develops along a single nave and with 8 altars; there are also decorations in stucco di Nicholas Curti made in 1762.

On the vault of the sanctuary there is a fresco which represents the glorification of the Madonna dei Miracoli, while in the apse there are two frescoes: one depicting the apparition of the Madonna dei Miracoli to a group of women, and another with the finding of the Madonna. These three frescoes were made in 1947 by the Catania painter Alessandro Abate. Here are the other works:

  • Near the main entrance, on the left, there is a sarcophagusmannerist in marble carved from Rock of Rapi in 1557, containing the remains of Don Fernando Vega.
  • First altar on the left: the Birth of the Virgin Mary, canvas of 1851 by Giuseppe Patania, painter from Palermo
  • In the chapel dedicated to Holy Mary of Miracles, surrounded by a round archin red marble, there is a painting depicting the Madonna. On 21 June 1784 the image of the Madonna was crowned. The painting was repainted in 1890 following a fire and was restored in 1963 by the Sicilian painter Gianbecchina.
  • Third altar on the left: the Holy Family, painted from Pataniain 1847
  • High altar: the Madonna of Miracles with Saint RochSaint SebastianSanta Rosalia (co-patrons of the city of Alcamo) during the cessation of the plague of 1575, canvas by Patania of 1828. On both sides there are two frescoes by A.Abate: the washerwomen struck by the stones at the stream and the authorities and people discover under the arch of the "Molinazzo" the image of the Madonna "Fonte di Misericordia", both of 1947.
  • First altar on the right: theAnnunciation, painted canvas by Patania in 1851
  • Second altar on the right: the Crucifixion, painted in 1847 by Patania
  • On the right, near the main entrance, there is aholy water font, probable work of the seventeenth century, in white marble.
  • On the right wall of the nave there is a beautiful medallionin marble it represents Judith del Gagini and which comes fromchurch of the Annunciation. (Source: Wikipedia)
