S. Benedetto/Monte Pietà/Monte delle Niniche/Monte della Pietà
Contrada S. Benedetto, so called due to the presence of the ruins of a church dedicated to the saint of the same name, is located west of the modern town and occupies the rocky slopes of Monte Gulea in the western part and those of Monte Pellegrino in the eastern part . The site conserves conspicuous traces of the indigenous settlement and of the residential complex of the Greek age, frequented from the archaic age up to the Hellenistic age, delimited by an imposing wall. The rocky ridge proceeds eastwards with the so-called Monte delle Nicchie, affected by numerous artificial cave tombs
of the Ancient Bronze Age, and with the Monte della Pietà, now the site of a church and affected by Byzantine rock dwellings. In the extreme south-western part of the site there are instead a group of tombs dug into the steep rock face and well known in the archaeological literature.
Schubring recalls the existence of 53 burials, but after the rock spur was cut at the end of the 1800s for the construction of the Sciacca-Caltabellotta road…
