Falconara cliff (ITA050008)
Description

Falconara cliff (ITA050008)

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA050008 - Hectares: 138

Description:

Lower dry lower thermo-Mediterranean bioclimate, with average annual temperature of 19 ° C, average annual rainfall of 409 mm (Gela station). From a geological point of view, the area is affected by the Lower Evaporitic Formation of the Messinian as well as by recent deposits of the Pleistocene and Upper Pliocene, on which lithosols and vertisols insist.

The original scrub formations are almost completely absent due to the centuries-old anthropic activity and the action of fire. The flat areas are currently occupied by herbaceous and woody crops, with weed communities dominated by Silene fuscata, Sinapis arvensis, Chrozophora tinctoria, Euphorbia chamaesyce, Diplotaxis erucoides, etc. The most steep or rocky areas are mostly characterized by arid grasslands with Ampleodesmos mauritanicus and transitory aspects connected to the abandonment of old crops. The garrigue features of Thymus capitatus on lithosols and outcropping rock are rarer in the area. The site is home to rare species of birds of prey.
