Rocca of Cefalù
Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA020001 - Hectares: 36
Description:
The SIC area extends for a total area of about 29 hectares, including the isolated limestone outcrop that overlooks the town of Cefalù, in whose territorial scope the biotope falls. The records relating to the thermopluviometric station of Cefalù show average annual temperature values equal to 18,8 ° C, with minimum and maximum averages ranging, respectively, between 12,2 ° C and 22 ° C, while rainfall is equal to 693,4 mm, in 74 rainy days (DURO et al., 1996). On the basis of the bioclimatic classification defined according to the RIVAS-MARTÍNEZ indices (1996), the area falls within the lower subhumid thermo-Mediterranean zone. The potential vegetation of the territory is mainly to be referred to the series of Olivastro and Arborescent Euphorbia (Oleo-Euphorbio dendroidis sigmetum), whose more evolved aspects are well represented especially along the ledges and the driest ridges of the southern slope. In the cooler areas of the northern part, the potential tends towards the Leccio series; in particular, the Pistacio-Querco virgilianae sigmetum, on the rocky substrates exposed to the north, and the Rhamno-Querco ilicis sigmetum, located along the detrital slopes below the Rocca. Among the other aspects to be mentioned, there is the microgeosigmetum of the rupicolous areas, quite widespread throughout the promontory.
The site denotes a certain faunal value (as it plays an important role as a migration route for numerous species of birds) floristic-itocenotic, as well as a naturalistic, environmental, historical and landscape interest. In the part above the Rocca there are widespread aspects of prairie sometimes tending towards the scrub with Euphorbia dendroides and Olea europaea var. sylvestris in addition to the chasmophytic vegetation, which are home to several interesting endemics and / or species of significant phytogeographic interest, listed in the list relating to section 3.3.
