The Reserve was established with the Regional Laws 98/81 and 16/96, extends in the western part of the Gulf of Castellammare, in the peninsula of San Vito Lo Capo which overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea between Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani, has of 1600 hectares (all in zone A) and largely falls within the municipality of San Vito Lo Capo and to a lesser extent in the municipality of Castellammare; it extends along 7 km of coast and is a true paradise of nature due to the great variety of natural environments present. The coast opens onto the sea with high and jagged limestone walls, interrupted by coves, rocky ravines and caves. The altitude of its peaks varies from 610 m above sea level at Pizzo Passo del Lupo to 913 at Monte Speziale.

The Reserve has two entrances, one from Scopello (main entrance, better equipped in terms of hospitality) and one from San Vito Lo Capo.
To access the Reserve from the South, arriving by car from the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, choose the Castellammare del Golfo exit and continue on State Road 187 towards Trapani. After about 4 km, take the junction for Scopello which leads to the coast. Once in the locality of Guidaloca, continue until you reach and pass the Tonnara di Scopello and its magnificent stacks. After a few km you come to the tunnel which marks the southern entrance to the reserve. Leave the car in the parking lot and continue on foot, starting from Cala di Mazzo di Sciacca, along the paths of the Reserve.
To access the Reserve from the North, it is instead necessary to follow the State Road 187 up to the crossroads for San Vito Lo Capo and from here, circumnavigating the peninsula, arrive at the Reserve car park, located about 500 meters from the Tonnarella dell'Uzzo.
