Porta Felice - Palermo
Corso Vittorio Emanuele. XVI-XVII century. The door is the entrance from the sea side to the Cassaro, one of the main axes of the city of Palermo. It takes its name from Donna Felice Orsini, wife of the Spanish viceroy Marcantonio Colonna, who, in 1582, decided to give a monumental entrance to the Cassaro (the current Corso Vittorio Emanuele), extended to the sea in 1581. The Porta, consisting of two imposing pillars, it was designed by the architect Mariano Smiriglio and the works lasted until 1637. The interval of time that passed allowed the differentiation of the facades of the pillars: so we have the first order (the one facing the sea) in gray marble and with typically Renaissance characteristics, while the second (following the first and completed by the architects Novelli, Smiriglio and Tedeschi) with more Baroque characteristics.
