Gate of the Greeks
Description

Gate of the Greeks

Piazza Kalsa in front of the Foro Italico
The gate was built in the 1553th century near the Church of San Nicolò dei Greci but was soon destroyed and rebuilt in 1754 inspired by the architectural style of the Porta di Castro. The first architectural revolution took place in 1783 with the demolition of one of the bastions that framed it, while the other was demolished in 1840. In this period the door was moved more towards the sea following the new wall perimeter and above it was built around to XNUMX the Palazzo Forcella-Baucina-De Seta by the architects Nicolò Puglia and Emmanuele Palazzotto.
On the sea side, the door is decorated with a boss motif that accentuates the chiaroschuro, in the decoration we also find columns with relative capitals. On the architrave, on the other hand, we find festoons of flowers and fruit and human figures lying down. Originally there was also an inscription and an armed aqulia symbol of the city, but these latter have been lost. The internal side, on the other hand, is almost completely devoid of decorations.
