to a large area called the Sicanian Basin, subsequently subjected to neogenic deformations that originated mountain formations consisting of
limestone rocks alternating with clays and marls, dated from the Middle Triassic to the Oligocene. In the southern part there are hills formed mostly by
sedimentary rocks referable to the evaporites of the Messinian. The bioclimate is lower subhumid upper Mesomediterranean with an average annual temperature of 17 ° C,
average annual rainfall 826 mm. The forest vegetation consists mainly of mixed woods dominated by holm oak and downy oak (Quercion ilicis), whose
floristic composition is determined by the climatic and edaphic characteristics of the stations. Also fragmentary are aspects of woody shrub vegetation
more or less degraded to Crataegus laciniata, C. monogyna, Pyrus amygdaliformis, etc. Along the waterways, riparian communities of poplars, willows, and
ash trees. There are also large areas occupied by herbaceous steppe vegetation, nitrophilous or ruderal, linked to both abandonment of crops and grazing and
fires. On the slopes subject to fire and pasture there are also prairies of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus, characterized by a rich floristic cortege. On
lithosols and rocky outcrops there is a garrigue dominated by Thymus spinulosus. On the gullies there are communities of saline clays, in which they participate
species of geobotanical interest such as Aster sorrentinii and Lavatera agrigentina.
4.2Quality and importance
In relation to the geo-pedological diversification, the flora and vegetation are quite varied. Over 600 plant species have been registered in the area
vascular. Among these, some are of phytogeographic interest, such as Celtis tournefortii, Trifolium brutium, Anthemis cupaniana, Aster sorrentinii, etc. (sections
