Pineta di Adrano and Biancavilla
Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA070012 - Hectares: 2378
Description:
This area located on the western side of Etna at altitudes between 1500 and 2000 m, is represented by ancient lava flows. The bioclimate is part of the lower subhumid supramediterranean and partly in the upper subhumid oromediterranean. The surfaces are mainly covered by pine forests with Pinus nigra ssp. calabrica, sometimes mixed with small strips of beech or poplar. Quercus congesta formations are found at lower altitudes. In the more open and rocky stations, thinned bushes and ephemeral lawns settle.
The importance of this site lies in the presence of extensive orophilous pine forests with Calabrian pine, which assumes an important landscape role. There are also several entities that in the regional area are rare or considered of significant phytogeographic interest, in turn mentioned in the list reported in section 3.3 (D). risk, or vulnerable, such as the Golden Eagle, the Wild Cat and Hermann's Tortoise. The invertebrate fauna is very diversified, rich in numerous endemic species, sometimes known only for the Etna area.
