Piazza delle Erbe and the Old Market
Once the city's botanical garden, then a place for the vegetable market, Piazza delle Erbe opens onto Via Papa Giovanni XXIII and bordered on one side by the Mercato Vecchio. The Market, built in 1867 on a project by the architect Fianchini, was the city market for the sale of fish and meat until the mid-900s. The building characterized by elegant external arcades and embellished inside by a fountain, today houses the headquarters of the Bufalino Foundation and the Civic Museum of Natural History.
