Pantano Morghella (ITA090004)

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA090004 - Hectares: 263 mm

Description:

Interesting coastal marsh environment affected by brackish waters subject to summer drying. Part of this quagmire is currently used as
saline. From the hydrogeological point of view, the Morghella quagmire is fed by rainwater and marine waters, due to infiltrations through the narrow cordon.
dune. The area is affected by a lower thermo-Mediterranean climate with average annual rainfall of about 500 mm and average annual temperatures of 18 ° C. There
vegetation that grows there is represented by perennial halophilous formations of Sarcocornietea fruticosae, and annuals of Thero-Suedetea. Frequent is also the
submerged vegetation of the Ruppietea and the helophyte vegetation of the Juncetea maritimi.
4.2Quality and importance
Coastal marsh area affected by highly specialized halophilous vegetation, stopping place for migratory birds. Despite the heavy influence
anthropic, in this area it is still possible to observe numerous examples of both submerged and amphibious halo-hygrophilous associations, some of which of a certain
naturalistic interest. This coastal marsh environment which until the 80s was largely used as a salt pan and which currently represents a site of
stop for many migratory species. Its importance is essentially linked to its ecological and structural role within the wetland system of the
South-eastern Sicily, of which it represents an important strategic node. Its conservation is therefore closely linked to the integrity of the entire system
within which frequent and documented faunal exchanges take place. It also retains a significant fraction of the richest invertebrate fauna that
characterizes Vendicari
