Municipal Palace of Scicli
The first building you come across along via Francesco Mormina Penna is the Palazzo Comunale, built between 1902 and 1906 in the place where the Benedictine Monastery once stood, annexed to the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista.
Despite the contrast of the volumes between the municipal structure that extends following an imaginary vertical line and the adjacent Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, the whole complex does not appear dissonant. A frame of pilasters and semi-columns on high pedestals frames the façade of the building further marked by smooth ashlars broken by the mullioned windows on the first floor. This is the only civil monument within a religious and aristocratic space.
In recent years the building has acquired considerable notoriety having become the film set of the fiction “Il commissario Montalbano”, a character born from the pen of the Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri. (Text source: Municipality of Scicli)
