Description

Gravina Palace of Palagonia

Via IV Aprile.
We have news of the palace as early as the fifteenth century, at that time it was divided into two different nuclei belonging to the Diana family and the Monferrato family. The two buildings were purchased, in the eighteenth century, by the Palagonia family who unified them and gave them the current shape. New works were carried out in the nineteenth century when one of the facades was completely overturned giving the impression of being a single building and also giving a more appropriate aspect to the time, the other facades remained unchanged, a large marble staircase was also created. At the beginning of the twentieth century the building passed to the Opera Pia Principe di Palagonia, a charity, but during the Second World War it was heavily affected by the bombings of the spring / summer of 1943 and in 1968 it was definitively abandoned. The town plan of 1968 provided for its demolition, for the construction of the "third street" it was then expropriated by the municipal administration. With the approval of the Detailed Executive Plan in 1993, the building was the subject of a restoration project by the architects Gianni Crivello, Mario LI Castri and the Engineer Francesco Calamia, the works begun in 1999 ended in 2002 and today it houses the offices of the Management General of the Municipality and some services of the Historic Center Office.
