Description

Garofalo Palace

Located in Ragusa, near the Cathedral of S. Giovanni Battista, Palazzo Garofalo presents itself with its large eclectic façade on Corso Italia, inserting itself among the fine buildings of the historic center. It was built by Rosario Garofalo together with his brother, direct descendants of the Garofalo family belonging to the group of families, such as the Leggio, the Bertini and others, who founded Ragusa Superiore.
Over time, Rosario Garofalo retained ownership of his part of the building, subsequently dividing it to his two sons, while his brother, due to various economic vicissitudes, had to surrender his part to creditors. The palace thus dismembered has changed various uses over time, undergoing significant alterations. The ground floor, in the Fascist period, was partly used as a public entertainment venue, the famous “Caffè Casina delle Rose”, which used the large internal courtyard as a dance floor.

In the '50s and' 60s the upper floors were modified and integrated with superfetations and used as offices for the Agricultural Consortium, while the ground floor rooms were used for commercial activities such as the first Paolino bookshop and the Morales company chandelier shop.
The ownership of the building was reunited in the eighties thanks to the purchase of a single owner who later resold it to the Cathedral of S. Giovanni Battista, which is now the owner. (Source: Ragusa Sottosopra n.6 of 30/12/2009)
