University Palace (Siculorum Gymnasium)

Catania University BuildingUniversity Square (Via Etnea). Seat of the Rectorate of the University of Catania. Built immediately after the earthquake of 1693. Several architects contributed to its construction including Francesco and Antonino Battaglia and Giovan Battista Vaccarini. Subsequently, following the earthquake of 1818, a further restoration was required which was entrusted to the architect Mario Di Stefano. The building consists of an entire block. The building has a splendid Aula magna frescoed by Giovan Battista Piparo and a university library containing over 200.000 volumes.
