Description

Carminello Oratory - Palermo

Via Porta Sant'Agata. Founded in 1605 as the headquarters of the Compagnia del Carmine. For centuries the Oratory was run by Carmelite friars who gathered there in prayer. In 1915 the management of the Oratory passed into the hands of the Confraternity of Maria Santissima del Rosario al Carminello. The Oratory has a rectangular shape, with the entrance door placed on one of the short sides. An anti-oratory (above which there is the choir) leads to the single nave. It is followed by a presbytery, which is accessed via a monumental arch. Both the side walls and the counter-façade are totally decorated with stucco reliefs. In particular, in this we find perspective roundels depicting the Nativity (left) and the Rest during the flight into Egypt (right). They date back to the early eighteenth century and if in the past they were attributed to Giacomo Serpotta, today they are more inclined to consider them the work of his son Procopio.
