Necropolis of San Marco
Description

Necropolis of San Marco

The appearance of the ridge today is noticeably different from what it must have appeared in ancient times as the central area has completely collapsed. The necropolis of San Marco, notes the scholar Giustolisi, has 28 burials. Most of the niche tombs are concentrated at the root of the two large reliefs that rise to the NE of the landslide area. The patrol of the site allowed to ascertain an excellent state of conservation and, moreover, the presence of ceramic remains of medium concentration scattered on a recently plowed land. These are fragments of African fired and sealed pottery and Roman amphorae. Among large boulders fallen from the central part of the crest it is possible to distinguish a tomb that has been transformed into a votive chapel inside which an interesting fresco of the Madonna with
Child.
