Necropolis of Palazzo Pignatelli
The baronial palace, which dominates the main square of Menfi, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, was built in 1638 at the behest of Diego Aragona Tagliavia. From what we know from the sources (see G. Mistretta, Menfi. History, monuments and traditions, Agrigento 1987), this structure occupies the same area that once belonged to the castle of Frederick II Hohenstaufen of Swabia, built in 1239, of which remains today visible the tower, partially collapsed by the earthquake of 1968, and, before this, of the small barracks referable to the Berber colony of Burgiomilluso. During the
restoration work on the building carried out in 1995, 2000 and 2004, the Superintendence BB.CC.AA of Agrigento carried out short archaeological excavations, bringing to light, in the ground floor rooms and in the courtyard, the remains of an early Christian necropolis
