Necropolis of C.da Monte Villanuova

Necropolis of C.da Monte Villanuova

A few hundred meters to the east from the road that connected Racalmuto to Montedoro, on the hill called m.te Villanuova which rises up to 620 m above sea level, we find the remains of a prehistoric necropolis. The rock emerges in two points separated by a soft saddle, the first northernmost place is smaller, and contains the remains of six burials. These are barely legible because the crumbly consistency of the limestone did not withstand atmospheric agents; they have a curved base and approximately curvilinear entrances, without antechambers. The largest outcrop, which forms the top of the mountain. The burials, about ten in all, were obtained in the western cusp of the limestone rock, are in a poor state of conservation and show the same characteristics seen in those of the minor outcrop, except for two examples in which there is an antechamber that precedes the actual cave
