Alcamo Sacred Art Museum

the Museum is housed in the premises of the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta. 

The museum contains many paintings, sculptures and d 'goldsmith's from the churches of Alcamo, dating back to the period from the thirteenth to the twentieth century, for a total of 150 works arranged in a space of 400 square meters, obtained from the former oratory of the Blessed Sacrament annexed to the basilica.

These works had been collected and sheltered in the church and adjacent rooms after Belice earthquake of 1968 (many churches having been rendered unusable) by monsignor Vincent Queenarchpriest from the 1944 1991.

Here are some of the works in the museum:

  • statue of the Madonna della Provvidenza (or Madonna del Melograno), made of alabaster marble, dating back to the end of the XNUMXth century and attributed to Peter de Bonitate; this sculpture probably comes from former Church of Santa Maria dello Stellario(or church of Santa Maria della Stella), which was demolished in 1964;
  • crucifix dating back to the first half of the sixteenth century, on a cross in silver foil from the eighteenth century;
  • canvas of the Madonna del Rosario with Saint FrancisSan DomenicoSt. Thomas AquinasSan Francesco di Paola(XNUMXth century), attributed to Vincenzo di Pavia;
  • canvas of St. Jude Thaddeus, of Giuseppe Renda(XVIII century);
  • Ph manneristdi Gaspare Vazzano (called “lo Zoppo di Gangi”), among which the Crowned Madonna with the SS. Vito and Bartolomeo (1612);
  • 800 paintings of Giuseppe Patania;
  • fresco depicting a Carmelite saint, by an unknown artist, dating back to the end of the XNUMXth century;
  • two dalmaticsdating back to the 500th century;
  • a statue of San Leonardo in polychrome wood from the first half of the XNUMXth century;
  • wooden statue of San Rocco, by an unknown author, (XNUMXth century);
  • wooden statue of San Sebastiano, by anonymous, (XNUMXth century);
  • oval canvas of San Castrenze, of Philip Randazzo, (XVIII century);
  • wooden reliquary with a painting of the risen Christ, San Gaetano and the relics of the 12 apostles, by anonymous, (XNUMXth century);
  • artistic monastic communication in gilded wood, with a XNUMXth-century gilded iron grate; the comunichino was the small window used for the communion of cloistered nuns.
  • Heart of Mary and of Jesus, of Giuseppe Renda(XVIII century);
  • oval canvas of the Madonna of Miracles, of anonymous, of the sec. XVIII;
  • oval canvas of the Addolorata, by Filippo Randazzo (Monocolo di Nicosia) dated 1735.
  • a painting by Sebastian Bagolinowhich depicts the discovery of the image of Maria Santissima dei Miracoli kept and venerated in sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli of Alcamo;
  • antiphonaryin several volumes, in illuminated parchment, dating back to the end of the XNUMXth century and the beginning of the XNUMXth century;
  • an artistic sedan chair, or portable chair for the Holy Viaticum, in gilded wood, with symbolic subjects painted on the sides, attributable to Vito D'Anna (XNUMXth century).
  • holy water fontfrom the second half of the XNUMXth century.

To these works are added many other objects of sacred art, including sculptures, architectural fragments, vestments, sacred scriptures and gold and silver jewels.
