Mount Zimmara (Gangi) (ITA020040)
Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA020040 - Hectares: 1783
Description:
The site is located in the so-called Alte Madonie, where it covers a total area of 1.043,58 hectares, affecting the territory of the municipality of Gangi (prov. Palermo) and, to a lesser extent, that of Sperlinga (prov. Enna). It develops within a vast orographic complex that reaches the peaks elevations in the peaks of Pizzo di Gallo (1162 m), Rocca Pizzuta (1125 m), Quattro Finaite (1313 m), Canale (1332 m), Zimmara (1333 m) and Minardo (1313 m). In territory predominantly clayey-quartzarenite soils, attributed to the Miocene and Pliocene series; from a bioclimatic point of view, the area it is comprised between the mesomediterraneo and the subhumid supramediterraneo, with average rainfall sometimes even close to 1000 mm. The biotope fits into a a large area almost uniformly affected for centuries by extensive agriculture with a grain-zootechnical orientation; the same areas are locally known with the term "campii", while the wooded areas are rather rarefied. A vast system of natural wetlands are preserved in the territory, albeit individually of modest extension.
It is a biotope of considerable flora, fauna and phytocenotic interest, as the natural pools, albeit small, present a significant floristic interest.phytocenotic, as well as faunal. Along the external margins are represented hygro-hydrophytic phytocoenoses diversified by the presence of peculiar species, with various entities that in the regional area have become quite rare and in the process of disappearing, some of which are also considered to be of phytogeographic relevance. Such species are included among those mentioned in the list in section 3.3 (D)
