The SIC area falls within the municipality of Sciacca.The landscape is characterized by the limestone relief of Monte San Calogero (Kronio). From the geological point of view in the area
mainly carbonate substrates of the Saccensi Units (Lower Miocene - Trias) are represented. The bioclimate can be defined as the lower Thermomediterranean
dry upper, with average annual rainfall of 564 mm, and average temperature of 18 ° C. Inside the site there are aspects of rock vegetation, of
garrigue and herbaceous communities with a steppe character.
4.2Quality and importance
As regards the vascular flora, in the area there are some endemic taxa, as well as rare entities or entities of phytogeographic interest (inserted in section 3.3: D).
In the upper part there is a plateau that houses the sanctuary and in the eastern area a conifer plant. The area is known for thermal phenomena, with
emission of vapors at c. 38 ° C in various cavities, among which the “Stufe di San Calogero”, the caves of Cucchiara, Mastro, del Lebbroso, etc. stand out. The vapors
sulphurous, apparently linked to secondary volcanic phenomena, are used for therapeutic purposes. In addition to the naturalistic and landscape one, the site also presents
archaeological and speleological interest.The site is also home to various species of rare or endangered falconiformes.
