Description:
The biotope is located just south of the town of Gangi (province of Palermo), where it covers a total area of 165,52 hectares. It is a small one dorsal, elongated in a north-west / south-east direction, which reaches the highest elevations in the peaks of Monte S. Calogero (m 1001) and of the Balza di Pezzalunga (1055 m). The morphology is of a hilly type, with slopes from stairways to moderately steep; pedologicamende dominated by lithosols, brown soils and soils leached browns. From the bioclimatic point of view, the area falls within the subhumid mesomediterranean belt, with an average temperature of 13-14 ° C and annual rainfall of about 800-900 mm. The landscape is largely dominated by partly mesophilic and partly xeric meadows, in which context the cacuminale characterized by the presence of Stipa sicula. In the surrounding areas, shrubs, scrubs and woods dominated by oak trees alternate deciduous.
The biotope has a certain landscape, floristic-phytocenotic and faunal interest. One of the very few stations of Stipa sicula is represented here, interesting endemic localized on the Madonie and in other small areas of Palermo. In the list in section 3.3, some are mentioned interesting elements of the flora, whose presence in the territory is considered of particular phytogeographic interest (D).
