Monte Rosamarina and Cozzo Famò (ITA020043)
Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA020043 - Hectares: 236
Description:
The SIC area falls within the carbonate ridge located between the so-called "Monti di Trabia" and the area of Monte S. Calogero, near Termini Imerese. It does it extends for about 236 hectares, involving the territory of the municipalities of Termini Imerese and Caccamo (province of Palermo). The site includes the gorge of the S. Leonardo downstream of the Rosamarina Dam, including the surrounding reliefs of M. Rosamarina (540 m), Cozzo Ligneri (519 m) and Cozzo Famò (450 m). From the point of geolithological point of view they are predominantly carbonatic substrates of the so-called paleobacino “Imerese”; under the bioclimatic aspect the territory is included between bands of the thermo-Mediterranean and the mesomediterranean (average temperature: 16-13 ° C), with sub-humid ombrotype (average rainfall greater than 650 mm). The vegetal landscape is affected by the intense forest exploitation of the past, as well as by the frequent fires that cross the territory; dominates the prairie ad Ampelodesma and other aspects of secondary vegetation, while the natural forest aspects are very sporadic. Such a landscape is predominantly from refer to the series of Olivastro (Oleo-Euphorbio dendroidis sigmetum) or of Holm oak (Pistacio-Querco ilicis sigmetum and Aceri campestris-Querco ilicis sigmetum), which play a pioneering role on limestone bedrock; the series of the Sughera (Genisto-Querco suberis sigmetum). On the deeper soils there are serial areas of the Virgilian oak (Oleo-Querco virgilianae sigmetum) or the pedicellated willow (Ulmo canescentis-Salico pedicellatae sigmetum), the latter linked to the edges of the watercourse. To the aforementioned sigmetes are also to be added various other microgeoseries linked to particular edaphic conditions, as in the case of the rocky walls and detrital areas, the latter of which are quite extensive at the base of the reliefs.
The area has a high floristic-phytocenotic and faunal interest, with partly peculiar aspects of vegetation, as in the case of the rupicolous communities, in the which is represented by a large number of endemic plant species and / or of significant phytogeographic interest. The species listed in section 3.3 ed indicated with the letter D refer to other entities that are quite rare in Sicily, whose presence in the territory in question is in any case considered to be significant phytogeographic interest. The site is also home to rare species of falconiformes.
