Description

Monte Porcara

Monte Porcara (388 m), in the municipality of Bagheria in Sicily, is the site of an archaeological site dated between the seventh and third centuries BC. According to a recent hypothesis (Vittorio Giustolisi, Chronia - Paropo - Solunto, Palermo 1972.) the ruins on Monte Porcara would be identified with the indigenous city of Paropo. Near the summit of the mountain there are few remains of the walls and the necropolis, consisting of caisson burials in limestone slabs and monolithic sarcophagi of the same material, still clearly distinguishable in 1968. At the same time, during the second half of the twentieth century, silver rings have been found at the site - one of which is engraved with the symbol of the goddess Tanit - and artefacts in polychrome glass paste of Punic manufacture including alabasteramphoriskoioinochoai and bearded heads, amulets in enamelled tablet, an amber head, a clay disc with Helios in relief, clay dice and mortar pestles in lava stone. Furthermore, abundant fragments of Attic pottery from the XNUMXth century BC have recently been found. The materials found in the Monte Porcara settlement are kept in the Regional Archaeological Museum of Palermo. (Text source: Wikipedia)
