Monte Pellegrino (ITA020014)

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA020014 - Hectares: 861

Description:

It is a biotope of significant naturalistic and environmental interest, already included within the homonymous nature reserve; it covers a total area of 833 hectares, falling within the municipal area of Palermo. The SIC area includes the rugged promontory that closes the Gulf of Palermo to the west; it culminates in the peaks of Pizzo Semaforo (600 m); slightly lower are the peaks that overlook the Camarrone (574 m) and Torre (586 m) plains. From a geological point of view, the territory is part of the series of the Palermo mountains, consisting of sediments relating to the so-called “Panormide platform”, as a result of a tectonic that caused the overlapping of predominantly carbonate units. It is a massif dating back to the paleogenic Cretaceous, characterized by limestone, dolomitic limestone, oolithic and pseudoolite limestone, biostromal limestone, calcirudite, calcarenite, calcilulite sometimes dolomized and with intraformational breccia lenses, with frequent phenomena of epigean and hypogeal karst phenomena. of the bioclimatic classification according to Rivas-Martinez, the territory falls mainly within the thermo-Mediterranean zone, with a lower subhumid shadow type; above 450-500 meters of altitude, it is possible to hypothesize conditions tending towards the mesomediterranean belt. The plant landscape is greatly affected by the intense uses of the past. The widespread urbanization of the coastal strip and the artificial forest populations that extensively cover the promontory are the anthropogenic aspects that most affect its physiognomy. The potential vegetation of the same area is mainly to be referred to the following series: - of the dwarf palm (Pistacio-Chamaeropo humilis sigmetum), along the coastal slopes; - of the Holm oak and the Alaterno (Rhamno-Querco ilicis sigmetum pistacietoso terebinthi), on the slopes detrital; -Olivastro (Oleo-Euphorbio dendroidis sigmetum), on the ledges and the driest rocky ridges (south side); - Holm oak and Lentisk (Pistacio-Querco ilicis sigmetum), in the upper part of the plateau. series are also to be added the micro geoseries linked to particular edaphic conditions, as in the case of rock walls, detrital areas, etc.

It is an area of significant naturalistic-environmental and landscape value. The chasmophytic formations of significant scientific and landscape interest, as well as a community in Ziziphus lotus, unique in Italy, should be noted. Section 3.3, indicated with the letter D, lists plant entities whose presence in the territory is considered to be of significant phytogeographic interest. The promontory of Monte Pellegrino also plays an important role in the migration of birds. Also of note is the presence of endemic and / or rare insect species

It falls within the Monte Pellegrino Reserve
