Monte Pellegrino - Grotta del Ponte or Porcospino (Grotta della Favorita)
“The cavity opens at the base of the cliff, almost under the vertical of a large niche about fifteen meters above the ground; it is visible only from a distance of a few meters. The entrance has an elongated, vertical shape, measuring approx
one meter in width and double in height, it creates an environment that is partly below the ground level. Descending into the cavity you realize that the current entrance is the upper part, the cusp, of a larger room
occluded by landslides and groundwater debris about 4 m thick which sealed a red earth deposit at the bottom and archaeological at the top.
Archeology: The deposit appears very poor, even sterile. A beautiful hippopotamus molar comes from the red earth (“Gemmellaro” Geological Museum).
A large amount of the deposit was removed. I wonder if it is a work to be attributed to De Gregorio, the only one who claims to have carried out excavations in the cave of the Favorita (DE GREGORIO 1889, p. 26).
The frequentation of man is hardly evidenced by some poor breccias, with flints and coals, present on the left wall about 3 meters from the current floor and just as many meters from the entrance. I gave up on withdrawing
champions so as not to destroy this one testimony. At the top of the right wall, about 5 meters above the ground, almost opposite the breach, within a cavity that can be reached by climbing, I found fragments of impasto terracotta, generically attributable to prehistoric times, now kept at the Archaeological Museum of Palermo ( MANNINO 1985, pp. 132-134).
