Mount Palmeto
Monte Palmeto is a plateau with an average altitude of 600 m which culminates at 645 m on the summit of Monte Paviglione. The entire south-western side, which overlooks the gulf of Castellammare del Golfo, is insurmountable to be surrounded by steep walls of hundreds of meters; the slope
north is steep, the eastern slope degrades with varying intensity to give space to a forest road that winds on the hill. To the south of the relief, separated from the Portella Fra Diana, stands the Montagnola of 555 m or Terrazza in the Terrasini area, sometimes erroneously assigned to Carini, in which are the remains of a fortified complex and a whirlpool from the Middle Ages: Partinicun per Cluverio . Modern scholars, particularly Gaetano Pottino and Benedetto Giambona, have thought of identifying on the Palmento the Heirkte of Polybius with arguments that have no comparison with the historian's narration nor with the very scarce archaeological evidence.
