Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA020035 - Hectares: 2683

Description:

The SIC area is located in the westernmost part of the Sicani Mountains, where it covers a total area of about 2630 hectares, falling within the territories municipalities of Sambuca di Sicilia and Contessa Entellina (province of Agrigento), as well as that of Giuliana (province of Palermo). It includes the ridge of Monte Genuardo (1180 m) and the vast wooded areas of S. Maria del Bosco, the area of which is largely already included within a nature reserve. geological, it is mainly Glauconite calcarenites (Tortonian-Lower Miocene) and carbonate formations of the Saccensi Units. In appearance bioclimatic, the territory lies between the thermomediterranean (average annual temperature above 16 ° C) and the mesomediterranean (temperature annual average of 16-13 ° C), with shadow type varying between the lower and upper subhumid (average annual rainfall of 600-1000 mm). The high heterogeneity environmental diversifies a somewhat articulated plant landscape, mainly to be referred to the following sigmetes: - Tyrrhenian coastal-hilly series, basifila, on limestone, dry-sub-humid thermo-Mediterranean of Olivastro (Oleo-Euphorbio dendroidis sigmetum); - Sicilian hill-montana, basifila, limestone, meso-subhumid-humid supramediterranea of Holm oak (Aceri campestris-Querco ilicis sigmetum); - Tyrrhenian hill-mountain, mesophytic and neutral-basifilous series, on soils brown calcic, thermo-mesomediterranean subhumid of the chestnut oak (Sorbo torminalis-Querco virgilianae sigmetum); - Sicilian coastal-submontane series, edafo-hygrophilous, thermo-mesomediterranean subhumid of the pedicellated willow (Ulmo-Salico pedicellatae sigmetum). To the aforementioned series are also to be added the micro-geoseries linked to particular edaphic conditions, as in the case of rocky walls, detrital areas, gullies, water holes, etc.

It is one of the areas of greatest naturalistic-environmental value in central Sicily. The biotope of S. Maria del Bosco, characterized by the presence of rather extensive and intact forest expressions, it is often cited in the bibliography for peculiar phytocenotic aspects, as well as a high number of plant entities endemic (some of which are exclusive) or rare. In section 3.3, indicated with the letter D, some species are listed whose presence in the territory is considered to be significant phytogeographic interest.
