Mount Falcone
Description

Mount Falcone

UT 34 - Monte Falcone: sporadic discovery of the prehistoric, Hellenistic and late ancient age; inhabited area of the archaic and classical age; settlement of the medieval age.

Here some siloi and part of a structure have been brought to light, the excavation of which has not been completed, while in the surrounding area, fragments of pottery with painted geometric decoration, loom weights, fragments of cups of late-archaic production and some fragments of medieval pottery. The inhabited area of the Archaic and Classical age occupies the top of the relief and its eastern, northern and southern slopes, extending over an area of approximately 6,8 hectares. Despite the poor visibility of the terrain, there is a high density of finds (10/12 rep./
mq) especially along the northern slopes, where the strong inclination has favored the sliding of the archaeological material. There are numerous stone-breaking operations, among which large fragments of tiles and pieces of millstones are often found. It was also possible to identify
some wall structures (Fig. 81); others, less visible, are indicated by alignments of rocks. On the small saddle that separates the mountain from the hill on whose crags the necropolis was identified, near the area where the excavations were carried out, there are patches of circular vegetation, of various sizes, and partly aligned; it is a thorny plant called Panicauru (Eringium campestre). Apart from sporadic fragments of combed roof tiles and roof tiles with vegetable degreaser and engraved comb motif, which testify to the frequentation of the relief in the Byzantine and early Middle Ages, the research has documented the presence of a settlement, which developed between the X and the XIII century, occupying the flat top of the hill and of which the necropolis is also known
