Mount Alveria (Netum)
Description

Mount Alveria (Netum)

Situated on the top of Mount Alveria, the ancient Netum, while developing in a naturally protected area (only a narrow passage to the north connected it with the surrounding mountain area, for the rest it was surrounded by deep valleys), was surrounded by walls and equipped with a castle. It was divided into five districts distinct from the main road axes. The city was destroyed by the earthquake of 1623. The excavation campaign carried out by Orsi in 1896 brought to light the Sicilian necropolis located in the valleys and divided into north necropolis, east necropolis, south-east necropolis and south-west necropolis, identified the city Greek of the Hellenistic period with the discovery of a necropolis, a gymnasium and heroa, the latter obtained in vast rooms dug into the rock, a construction technique of ancient Sicilian origin. To the Christian-Byzantine period, 1961th cent. AD, belong the small hypogea, about a dozen, which Orsi found in part near the castle and the rest in the upper part of the Sicilian necropolis, the north one. Remarkable is the presence among these of a Jewish catacomb. The Byzantine cemetery, on the other hand, was found on a plain in the countryside, under the necropolis to the south-east, about thirty bell-shaped pits which yielded finds in all respects similar to those of the Byzantine necropolis of Grotticelli in Syracuse. Much later, from 1963 to 1972, essays were carried out in the various buildings by G. Santocono Russo on behalf of the Superintendency of Monuments of Catania. The essays carried out in Netum by the Superintendence of Antiquities of Syracuse under the direction of V. La Rosa are from 74-1990. A Hellenistic terrace is identified in the area below the Hieronian Gymnasium near which he proposed to place the agora of the Hellenistic city. The remains of a rectangular building on the same site as the church of S. Elia belong to the same period. In XNUMX the conservative restoration works, reliefs and essays in the area of the Castle in that of the Jesuit College, at the Mother Church of San Nicolò and the Hermitage of Santa Maria della Provvidenza
performed by the Superintendency of Syracuse
