"Cartridge" yellow "purceddu" green winter melon
In Sicily, until the early 80s, the varietal panorama of the winter melon was limited to local ecotypes, among which, the most common were Cartucciaro and Purceddu. The Purceddu is wrinkled with a green and round skin, the Cartucciaro is smooth with a yellow skin and elongated. Winter melons are so called because, despite being harvested in the summer, it is ideal to taste them from September to December, when they reach the right ripeness. During this time interval, they enjoy the coolness hanging from the balconies of the houses or in other airy places, where their sweetness develops better.
