Description

Politi Mausoleum

The mausoleum was discovered in 1826 by the painter-antiquarian Vincenzo Politi. Located in Syracuse, a stone's throw from the archaeological museum, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle lacrime and the Catacombs of S. Giovanni, it is located under the asphalt of Viale Teocrito, whose road surface, when it was raised, took little account of the presence of the monument, burying it and making it almost disappear from the sight of those who pass by on foot or by car. Neglect did the rest. The mausoleum dates back to the 2th century. AD and was intended for XNUMX high-ranking people who had the possibility of opting for their own private construction rather than being buried in the Catacomb. Inside it has the remains of two sarcophagi, and many frescoes. The walls and the vault are frescoed with garlands, festoons, roses, peacocks and other birds.
