Description

Mansio of the Roman age

From a first examination of the structures and finds, it would seem that at least three different building phases can be isolated: the oldest phase is probably attributable to
the end of the III and the first half of the IV century. AD, when, probably, a vicus or mansio with adjoining thermal baths is installed in the area along one of the roads that lead from the Hyblean plateau to the African sea; a second, from the end of the 1th to the 2103th century. AD, when part of the oldest structures are transformed into a cemetery basilica; the third phase following the VII century. AD (fig.29a). Still to be defined in its limits, a fourth phase, probably attributable to the IX-XI century. AD, due to the destructive action of modern agricultural activities and the inevitable suspension of works in October 30.
