Madonna du Rotolo of Mezz'Austo
On the island of Marettimo, in the chapel known as the "Rotolo", there is a statue of the Madonna, a reproduction of the Holy Mary of Trapani. According to the wording on a plaque located inside the church, the small chapel was built in 1922. Tradition says that a large boulder, precisely the "scroll", which was found almost in the place where the chapel is today , poised between the road and the cliff, miraculously stopped at that very point, saving a fisherman who with his rod was on the cliff below. As a sign of thanks, the fisherman had the chapel built.
According to another version handed down by the elders, a small effigy of the Madonna of Trapani was found precisely in that location. A builder thus decided to erect a small votive shrine right on the spot of the discovery but, due to the morphology of the land, he was forced to move the construction a few metres. The following day, after the work was finished, the large boulder rolled over, destroying the structure. It was thus decided to rebuild the chapel in the exact spot where the discovery had occurred.
Although the chapel is located on the island of Marettimo, the Madonna del Rotolo is also celebrated with great devotion in Favignana. On the night between 14 and 15 August, both in Favignana and Marettimo, numerous bonfires are lit in honor of the Madonna. The following day the evocative procession of boats on the sea takes place in honor of the assumption of the Virgin Mary.
