The Foundry is located in the homonymous square which takes its name from the fact that in this area, where an arsenal probably stood in the Arab era, the Real Foundry was built in 1601, also called 'Casa del Tarzanà', (from the Arabic dar as-san, tarsianatus in the Latin of the Middle Ages or house of work, arsenal) intended for a military establishment and for the production and casting of artillery pieces. The volume on 'Palermo, its past, its present, its monuments' by Isidoro La Lumia, published in 1875, testifies to this. and military warehouse, to be linked to the popular uprisings of the seventeenth century, which often had the port area of Cala as a backdrop. The Foundry in the first decades of the nineteenth century was called 'Arsenal of Artillery', it functioned as such until 1840. After that year the guns were melted in the nearby Castello a mare and the old foundry, as Girolamo Di Marzo Ferro specifies in 1859, it was used to house the recruits of those corps who came from Naples and who did not belong to regiments stationed in Palermo. In the second half of the 800th century, the building of the Royal Foundry returned to its original destination: it was in fact the first nucleus of the famous Oretea Foundry, created by Vincenzo Florio in 1841, then moved further south, which with the processing of iron and cast iron contributed to the development of the Liberty city. The activities of the foundry, whose building, in the meantime, had been once again used as a barracks, definitively ceased after the bombings of 1943, which destroyed a large part of the building.
