"Upon entering the city, the teams immediately headed to Piazza Fieravecchia (a symbolic place since the Sicilian revolution of 1848 had begun there). At this point the inhabitants were convinced that the Garibaldini had entered Palermo and the population rose up; the bells began to ring in flocks. At the same time a warship placed in front of via S. Antonino (now via Lincoln) began to pull to prevent access to Porta Termini. The same point was taken by the shooting of the soldiers present at the Porta Sant'Antonino and from the barracks located nearby; the attackers then waited for the interval between one shot and the other of the ship to cross the crossroads placed in front of the door. To let the General pass, a barricade of various objects was built, thus allowing Garibaldi to enter the city around four in the morning"(Source: wikipedia)
