Legend of the ghost of the nun (Teatro Massimo di Palermo)

To enable the construction of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, at the end of the nineteenth century some pre-existing structures were demolished, including the Church of St. Francis of the Stigmata, monastero and cemetery annexes.
According to legend, during the demolition works the church was desecrated. tomb of a nun, who lived in the nineteenth century, and since then her restless spirit has haunted the theatre.
Many say they have seen the shadow of the nun wandering behind the scenes or in the basement, and popular tradition has it that the ghost throws curses against anyone who disturbs his peace.
It is precisely to these curses that the numerous vicissitudes that marked the history of the theatre are attributed: 23 years to complete its construction and others 23 years of closure and abandonment before reopening.
It is also said that inside the theatre there is a step known as “the nun's step”, which those who dare to doubt the legend would stumble upon.
