Legend of the ghost of the nun (Teatro Massimo di Palermo)
Well included in the IWB register of the Sicily Region (Places of the Sacred) - Sector "The Places of Myth and Legends" in the following sub-category: Places of ghost legends.
To allow the construction of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, some pre-existing structures were demolished including the Church of San Francesco delle Stimate, the monastery and the annexed cemetery. During the works, according to legend, the tomb of a nun (1800), whose ghost has haunted the theater since then, seems to have been desecrated. It is said that many have seen the shadow of the nun wandering behind the scenes and in the basement and, according to tradition, she throws real curses. It is precisely because of the ghost's curses that it took 23 years for the construction of the theater and that for a further 23 years it remained closed in a state of neglect. It is also said that in the theater there is a step called "the step of the nun" where those who do not believe in the legend stumble.
