Legend of the Treasure of Calafarina

Legend has it that Ben Avert, Arab emir of Noto had fallen in battle against the Normans. It was 1086. When the city fell, the widow and the son of the emir with a caravan of 30 people and a hundred mules loaded with treasures set off towards Marzamemi to embark for Egypt. Before setting sail, the princess, for fear that the treasure would be stolen from her, had it hidden inside the cave of Calafarina. The slaves who buried it were slaughtered. With a magical rite, the souls of the slaves killed were tied to guard the treasure that until today no one has been able to find. On stormy nights you can still hear the cries of the unfortunate who invoke the name of the one who will be able to remove the spell and free them.

The cave of Calafarina has very ancient origins, it is believed to be inhabited from the Mesolithic era and was explored by the famous archaeologist Paolo Orsi who found remains from various eras, in particular remains of ancient bronze.
