Oliveri Lagoon - Tindari (ITA030012)

Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA030012- Hectares: 467

The SIC embraces the coastal stretch between Mongiove and the Laghetti di Marinello nature reserve, including the beach and the coastal cliffs of Capo Tindari, up to Coda di Fox. It falls within the municipal area of Patti, where it covers an area of about 420 hectares, including one of the most interesting biotopes of the The northern coast of Messina. From the geological point of view, the area falls within the Aspromonte Unit (Calabride Complex), mainly made up of impure marbles, interspersed with paragneiss and mica schists or associated with amphibolites; phlogopite, quartz and feldspar are the most common silicates (LENTINI et al. 1988). Based on the bioclimatic classification according to Rivas-Martinez, the territory falls mainly within the thermo-Mediterranean zone (Average annual temperature of 17-18 ° C), with a lower subhumid shadow type (average annual rainfall of 700-800 mm). Along the wide beach that develops near Capo Tindari there are interesting dune aspects, while towards the interior a series of lakes are outlined which constantly change in appearance, in function of the lively game of tides and storm surges. The main ones are three, locally known with the names of Marinello (the largest), Verde and Mergolo della Tuna fish; Lake Marinello is completely isolated from the sea and relatively more intact, while the other two are in communication with the sea. The confluence of fresh water springs that emerge at the base of the limestone promontory of Capo Tindari attenuates the saline concentration, allowing the development of a luxuriant marsh and lake vegetation. The plant landscape of the areas above is greatly affected by the intense uses of the past, as well as by the fires that occur almost annually. Along the promontory the secondary prairie at Ampelodesma dominates uncontested, sometimes mixed with aspects of maquis, in addition to the aspects of chasmophytic vegetation of the cliffs.

It is an area of considerable floristic-phytocenotic, as well as faunal and landscape interest. However, aspects of dune vegetation should be mentioned very little represented along the coastal strip of northern Sicily. Along the beach there are also some peculiar humid brackish environments from the waters warm and very clear. The list in section 3.3 mentions the endemic floristic entities - some of which are exclusive (Centaurea ucriae subsp. sequenziae and Festuca humifusa) - in addition to species of significant phytogeographic interest (D), such as Echinops spinosissimus, which this area is the most important Sicilian resorts. The beaches are a temporary stop for numerous species of migratory birds, some of which are of considerable importance from the point of view of conservation. Noteworthy, due to the presence of numerous endemic species, is also the invertebrate fauna hosted by the site
