Pozzillo Lake (ITA060003)

Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA060003 - Hectares: 3393

Description:

The site, extended for 3776.15 Ha, falls within the territories of Agira, Gagliano and Regalbuto. The soils are clayey with good components in sand and humus. In the vicinity
of the water mirror there are loamy-clayey soils. The rocky substrates are made up of clays, limestone and gypsum. Often on the slopes there are rocky outcrops.
The climate of the site is dry Mesomediterranean according to the terminology of Rivas Martinez. The site is an artificial basin closed in the western part by a dam in
concrete. The burial was extended over time by Eucalyptus sp. pl. carried out only on the slopes surrounding the most sloping stretch of water
mild. Originally the top parts of the surrounding hills were not affected by reforestation. Currently modest interventions are observed here
with Pinus halepensis Miller. A large part of the land surrounding the stretch of water is used for cereal farming. The remaining plots have aspects
vegetation afferent to the Thero-Brachypodietea in rather primitive forms. The latter do not present aspects of evolution towards deciduous oaks (which
is the climacic vegetation of the area) due to the intense sheep and goat grazing to which they are subjected. Rare are the areas here where the therophytic vegetation is
replaced by perennial herbaceous vegetation. This represented by Ampelodesmeti, Hyparrenieti and Lygeti almost never reaches good levels of
expressiveness, but generally occurs in degraded forms. Also the surrounding vegetation on areas flooded in winter and dry in summer occurs in
impoverished forms. However, this is not due to a possible absence of flat areas (present on the southern edge of the lake) but to the strong fluctuations of the
free water surface induced by the seasonal cycle of rainfall The species listed in Chapter 3.3 are not species of particular biogeographical value, but
they simply represent species indicating the substrate (eg Asparagus albus) or indicating the low salinity of the waters (Tamarix gallica) or
artificiality of the basin (Crypsis schoenoides and Heliotropium supinum).
formations in Ampelodesmos mauritanica

From a floristic and vegetational point of view, the site has little value. It could improve this value only following containment of cattle, sheep and grazing
goat cheese and orientation, by the Manager, of the natural trends towards the climatic vegetation of the place. The vegetation of the wetlands emerged,
semi-submerged and submerged could extend and become richer only as a result of better control of the levels of the free surface of the waters.
a considerable ornithological importance not only for the abundant contingents of wintering aquatic plants but also because it appears to be one of the few Sicilian places in
where some species nest (eg gray heron, night heron) that in the past had been.
