Ancipa Lake
Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA060005 - Hectares: 1519
Description:
It is a mountainous area at altitudes between 950 and about 1300 m affected by siliceous substrates mainly represented by flysch, schist and gneiss. It falls on the southern slope of the Nebrodi and coincides with the basin of Lake Ancipa, an artificial reservoir. The bioclimate is part of the sub-humid mesomediterranean. The forest formations are represented by Cerrete and mesophilic woods with Quercus congesta. Extensive surfaces are covered by mesophilic pastures and thorny shrubs. There are also frequent areas covered by more or less recent reforestation. The central part of the area is occupied by the artificial basin in which aspects of submerged vegetation are observed, which develop in the shallower sections. Along the edges in correspondence with the surfaces subject to emergence during the summer period, annual hygrophilous aspects characterized by reptant therophytes with subnitrophilic needs settle.
This area is important above all for the presence of the artificial basin of the Ancipa, which being located in a mountain area has a certain naturalistic value for the avifauna. In particular, it is a resting place for wintering aquatic birds and for transit during the migration period. Here there are also several entities that in the regional area are rare or considered of significant phytogeographic interest, in turn mentioned in the list reported in section 3.3 (D).
